European-based model, Lisa Do Couto Teixeira, who has successfully worked on several prestigious national campaigns including one for Nike with tennis superstar Serena Williams, loves all sorts of art, especially if it’s socially engaging. For example, the experienced model, who started out in her profession at age 16, stands out with a very unique look — a big and natural red afro and gorgeous freckles. She brilliantly stands out with a look that’s described as “atypical.”

But Do Couto Teixeira, whose unique look has graced magazine covers also stands out for her attitude towards life: “Working with Causette Magazine was particularly meaningful. It was my first magazine job, and they offered me a cover! Their focus on empowering women made it even more special.”

She has also volunteered for ONU Femmes, a campaign dedicated to fighting violence against women. In fact, she sports a small tattoo that reflects her view on life: “I have a tattoo on my right ribs that symbolizes the fist of rebellion, with blood, as a reminder to always fight for your values and beliefs, no matter what.”

Additionally, with the goal of modeling for American clients, Do Couto Teixeira applauds New York State governor, Kathy Hochul, who recently signed a bill of rights giving models protection from sexual harassment, discrimination and AI. Do Couto Teixeira, who agrees with the need for basic labor protections to create a safe, equitable work environment in the fashion industry, says, “I think the Fashion Workers Act in New York is fantastic. Models deserve protections like any other profession, and I wish France would adopt similar measures. It’s disappointing that we don’t have strong unions or representation in the industry here. But I’m all for change and standing up for it.”

Prominent, world-wide brands like YSL keep coming back to book Do Couto Teixeira because of what she brings to the table. She explains, “As a model, I had a director recently tell me during a Clarins shoot that I’m ‘full of ideas.’ I dislike doing the same thing repeatedly, so I always try to find a way to have fun, suggest something new, and bring something fresh to the table.”

Lisa Do Couto Teixeira, who has modeled across Europe for other world-renowned beauty labels (Armani, Lancome and Sephora), and international consumer brands (Samsung, McDonalds, Air France, Google), and hip clothing companies (Undiz, Uniqlo, Pimkie), talks about those “fresh” assets that she contributes to her model shoots, and about her unique look.

On the red carpet

— Having been on your own since you were 17, what have you learned that you apply to your career?

— As a person, I would say I’m determined, very independent, and self-reliant. I moved out and gained my independence at 17 because I had goals I wanted to achieve. I think gaining independence at a young age means you learn a lot from the “school of life.” I’ve learned to trust myself, surround myself with kind and supportive people — in return I’m loyal to a fault. I also try to always find joy in what I do. I hope I’ll always enjoy my work because it would be sad to lose that passion.

— With your independence, what moves did you make to jumpstart your modeling career?

— After graduating high school at 17, I decided to enroll in a professional theater program. At the same time, I attended university because it was my mother’s condition for paying for my theater studies. Later, I decided to quit university and took full responsibility for paying for both my theater education and my apartment in Paris — in the center of the fashion business — as I believed strongly in my modeling career.

— How important has your unique look been to book modeling jobs?

— I think my look is an asset for some brands and projects, but not for others — it depends on the context. However, I believe my look works well on camera. I’ve had directors tell me I’m easy to work with and that they’re proud of my work. Lighting technicians have also commented on how my face absorbs light beautifully. I think that’s appealing for some people who are looking for something unique, even if it’s not to everyone’s taste. And to be honest, it’s probably an advantage because if someone is looking for a profile like mine, I have less competition, haha.

Modeling for Gichancy

— What are some “Do’s and Don’ts” for the modeling business?

— I don’t think there are strict “do’s and don’ts” in the modeling industry. My only advice would be to stay true to yourself, don’t compromise who you are to conform to industry standards, and always treat others with respect. Try to learn as much as possible from everyone you work with.

— What’s the difference between male and female photographers, are they still mostly men or both now?

— Regarding photographers, I’ve never paid much attention to their gender. I’ve never had issues working with male photographers like some other models may have experienced, and I tend to overlook it entirely. At first, I even thought the industry was balanced, but when I reflected on it, I realized most photographers and directors I’ve worked with are men. That said, my experience isn’t representative of the whole industry, but I do hope this imbalance is changing for the better.

— Is the performance of modeling similar to acting?

— I believe, whether it’s modeling or acting, that as long as you enjoy what you do you’re essentially playing with the camera. It’s about throwing yourself into it, listening to the director, and staying engaged. As long as it’s fun and you’re discovering new things, it’s definitely a form of play. As for acting jobs, I have appeared in OPJ 974, and I’m proud to say it was my first series. Then, I appeared in Bugarach, and also the movie Barbaque, which was released in the U.S. as Some Like It Rare by Fabrice Éboué. Last October, I was featured in a Netflix film about werewolves called Loups-Garous (“Family Pack” in English), where I had the chance to play Jean Reno’s granddaughter. I was honored to play that role. And, I got to have my profile right in the middle of the poster, complete with my big red afro. Overall, my long-term goals are to work with major brands and balance my modeling work with my acting career.
