Crawlspace — ”thundering new offerings”

How’s this for a lark?

World domination for Crawlspace, a realtor/punk band from Los Feliz — and, why not?

Indeed, Crawlspace is four musicians whose mutual musical passion has birthed a genre-bending punk band, a creative escape from their real estate day-hustle. They’ve channeled their experiences into quirky songs about property dealings and life’s absurdities, gaining a fanbase. Now, they’re about to debut some thundering new offerings and some previous “classics” at Gold-Diggers, a landmark East Hollywood watering hole that’s been described as a “rock and roll palace” with “just the right amount of sleaze.”

Punk/rock with a nod and a wink

The four realtor bandmates are excited to hit the stage at Gold-Diggers, suggesting, “It’s going to be our grand debut!” So, we caught up with Crawlspace and spoke to lead vocalist/guitarist Brian Moore to chat about the band:

— So, what does Crawlspace bring to the table, as a realtor/punk band?

— Crawlspace emerged right before the pandemic struck. The lineup includes Joe Devarenne rocking the lead guitar/vocals; Ellen Philips on bass/vocals; Peter Tomlinson slamming the drums/vocals; and, your humble storyteller, Brian Moore. holding it down on rhythm guitar/lead vocals. Here’s a fun fact — we’ve all been colleagues at Sotheby’s International Realty in Los Feliz for ages. It was our mutual love for music that sparked this collaboration. Despite our LA roots, we come from places like Michigan, Massachusetts, and even London, England. Our short-term goal is — nailing our first gig and hopefully lining up more. Long-term? World domination through tours!

— We detect a sense of sly humor in your music, tell us about the individual songs.

— Our original EP, “Live From Frogtown,” was cooked up and served at Frogtown Creative, near Atwater, in Perfect Sound Studios, by the wizard Sean Kellett. Every song is a real story, and just listen closely to catch the plot: “House Full of Rats” was inspired by a rat-infested house on Holly Oak Dr in Los Feliz; “Happy Trails” pays homage to a legendary local dude from Montecito; “Garvanza” tells of our bass player’s nightmare in, well, Garvanza; and “Request For Repair” is a musical take on the 2020 real estate market.

— So, what’s going to be new to the playlist when you rock the rafters at Gold-Diggers?

— Brace yourself for our new songs: because we are realtors, “Sewer Scan” is about getting your sewer line inspected; “Tent Raid” tells the tale of a house burglary during termite tenting; “Santa Susanna” dives into the 1950s Simi Valley Rocketdyne nuclear reactor meltdown — so a bit of Angeleno history; and, because we’re still a bunch of punks in slacks, “Kool-Aid” is our take on corporate greed and the allure of greener pastures.

— So, are you guys like “neo-punk” with a nod and wink?

— A big nod and wink. But. punk rock is still kicking and sounding as raw as ever. We’re all about that blend of metal and punk — think thundering power chords and lightning-fast tunes. Why this genre? Well, at our age, we’ve got a deep love for punk metal. Plus, our musical tastes and backgrounds are as diverse as our hometowns. So, come check us out “bringing down the house” when we hit the stage at Gold-Diggers in East Hollywood on Sunday, January 28, around 3:30 pm. [Laughs] And, be witness to the beginning of our world domination!

Resistance is futile…
