World Cup 2018: After 1–0 Loss, Reigning Champs Germany called “Scheiße,” While Mexico’s Victorious El Tri are #NadaNosDetiene
Mexico 1–0 Germany: The defending champs and FIFA’s #1 ranked team became the third straight reigning champ to fail to win their opener. German paper Bild labeled the defeat “an embarrassing start,” while goalscorer and PSV winger Hirving Lozano is the toast of Mexico tonight, saying, “We were brave! We have great players and we have shown it, as the result is the most important thing.”
And, the social media comments from around the world, said it all about this shock result:
From Europe
Chris Davis: “Not the first time Germany have gone to Russia unprepared.”
Barry Mead: “Nothing quite like seeing the Hun get beaten, amazed at some of their selections, too, but all to the good and if they have to go home early, all the better.”
From the USA
Jon Hamblen: “The Germans got blitzkrieged! I didn’t think Mexico could sustain that work rate for 90 minutes, and it certainly looked questionable at the end, but El Tri held on. A very exciting 90 minutes of football.”
Brandon Cline: “I didn’t think Mexico would keep that press up, too. They shredded Germany’s back line to bits multiple times on the break. That should have been a 3 or 4–0 game. Mexico manhandled them.”
Ric Mercado: “To my Mexican friends and family, congratulations. I know how much El Tri means to you all. That was a hard working, stubborn, and proud performance. In short, it couldn’t have been more Mexican!”
Scott Johnson:”The normally clinical German team showed off their passing with quantity but the clinic was closed when it came to quality finishing. Mexico took advantage of the heavy passing to pick their spots, make timely steals and find numerous counter attacks with numbers in their favor.”
Germany’s manager Joachim Low and his seasoned team now have a long six-day wait to face Sweden, with midfielder Toni Kroos admitting they “are now under pressure, we have to get six points from the next two games.”
Meanwhile. Mexico’s brave manager, Juan Carlos Osorio, often left his front –three players up the pitch, even when his defense was facing set-pieces, proudly explaining:
“Give all credit to the players, we had a plan and executed it. We handled them very well. We had very good transitions and very good chances to score. The boys did an extraordinary job with their commitment — they gave it all. That’s how you play Germany and in the world cup. Our motto was to play with the love of winning and not the fear of losing. We want to share this with all Mexican fans.”
Mexican fans in their homeland, all across America, and in Russia were rocking the night away in celebration. And, contrary to people who disparage the great nation of Mexico, as American Jon Hamblen, who supports Tottenham Hotspur football club, notes: “I grew up in Salinas in California surrounded by a culture that puts family first and that celebrates its people. That’s the Mexico I know. Great music, food and art. They have a beautiful culture, people and passionate fans. Reminds me of our Spurs family!”
But, this opening win is just the beginning, and the analysts at FOX Sports, which is televising the tournament here in the US, suggest that the team has “still got a lot of work to do, and they can’t think we just beat Germany, we can beat these other teams.”
But for a few days, El Tri can bask in the glow of humbling the World Cup champions, and then dream of something even better!
